Yes these girls are there year round but far less around Chinese News Year.

Expect things to go up like airfares, hotels, taxis and crime. Expect some places to be closed. You can assume 70% or more of the girls will go home. During CNY,people travel home and it is the largest annual human migration in the world. Sometime like 150 million people travel back home.

Here is a video about the conditions one time in Guangzhou rail station during CNY.

During the summer and Chinese News Year are the most expensive time to travel back to China.  Last year I recall it was about $1500 for the cheapest flight in the summer for the West coast.   This year the lowerest was about $1300.00 for the summer.  It's all supply and demand and the price of oil. Oil is about 84$ a barrel now. Last year it was about $100 during the summer. For the summer, you have to book sometimes 2-3 months in advance or else there will  be no seat unless you want to pay some outrageous prices.

Certain holidays like the first week in May and Oct are expensive.  For some reason my travel agent said January 1 to 8 is bad too. You should include special events like the sometime like a world's fair, or Olympics but these events have gone.

Holidays in the USA, like XMAS, Easter, Thanksgiving, you don't have to worry. Different customs and culture.

Edit: typo added "[" and "for the West coiast"

best time to go usually is mid October, and about a month after CNY.  Those are the two periods when the stars align of low season for airfares, when then girls are available, and the weather is more tolerable (I find any place above 30C with high humidity to be too damn hot).

High season for airfares are early Nov to early Jan, the two weeks leading up to CNY, and May to near the end of August.  Girls usually aren't as plentiful the weeks before and after Oct 1 (major holiday),  mid-Autumn (sometime in September), and May 1 (major holiday).  CNY you should definitely avoid (late Jan to mid-Feb)

airfares were much higher this summer than in years past.  Wound up paying $1300US for mid-August flight, whereas in years past the fares would start coming down in 2nd week of August to around $1000-1100.  Probably because of Universiade this year.  Low season fares from West Coast on the premium carriers Cathay and Singapore Air is $900, but you can get connecting flights from the 2nd tier airlines such as China Air (connect in Taipei) for $700.  Two years ago when the economy was in the toilet summer fares were $550 from the West Coast to HK, and the best was during the dot.com implosion era circa November 2001 when direct flights were going for $400 from the West Coast.

You guys oughta also check out the prices on China Eastern to Guangzhu as well as the other Chinese airlines thru the Chinatown travel agents in NY/SFO/LA.  Some of them can come up with some pretty good deals.

Also, if you want a bit of comfort and NOT want to pay Business class fares, you should check out prices on Evergreen and  their supreme or superior (?) Economy seats. Well worth the extra couple hundred or so to get into one of those Old fashioned business class seats with a bit more room etc. At least I think those are still available but you have to transit in Taipei on the way over at some unGodly hour and wait for quite a few hours for the connection.

look up the national public holidays in china - national day, labour day, mid-autumn, etc and avoid those times.
Also google on if any big event is going on in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or dongguan and avoid that.

Every year like clockwork, you also gotta avoid the Guangzhou international trade fair - happens in april and october.

aside from that, you're in the clear.

price for air ticket?? all depends on where you're flying from! west coast, east coast??

I try to avoid summers cause it's just too hot.  And i agree that avoiding the big holidays is smart, unless you're looking to spend time with family.  HK / China is busy and packed enough as it is, dont need the holidays to feel more claustrophobic.

I personally love the winter.

I always recommend my friends and relatives to come over during December, Xmas week to New year is the best.

Cooler and no LE raids (so far never experienced). All joints are opened for business and abundance of chicks before the CNY rush.

Courier, charter flights

The price of air travel has certainly come down (comparatively) the past decade or so and there's so much choices nowadays.

During my university days, I had travelled quite a bit on courier flights (where you can only hand carry your stuff, the baggage allowance being used by the courier company) as well as charter flights - where a company (if I recall, there was one called Trans-America) would charter a flight between the U.S. and Asia and sell the individual seats quite cheaply on campuses. Couple times I hooked up with a girl whilst on these flights full of young people.

Are these kind of flights still happening?

I've flown AC 3x in my life- all 3x because someone else booked my trips and I gave them shit for it afterwards.  Avoid whenever possible.   From service, to food, to seat comfort, to entertainment- it's all lacking.

I think with AE's Member's Rewards you can redeem points to get a free trip or partial free trip with Cathay Pacific depending on how many mileage you wish to use.  The "free" trip you still end up paying the normal taxes and that still ends up a few hundred dollars.  This offer is good to the end of the year.

http://tinyurl.com/3jkkrag

For Economy to HK:

60,000 points & $495

125,000 points

Love using CP as they have four flights to HK and IMHO their economy class are sometimes better than the competition's business class (well at least a couple year's ago comparing to Continental).

I'm just wondering, normally for people that are from the states and fly to HK and/or China, do you guys normally use a Agent or just go online to purchase your tickets for the flight and/or hotels?

For Instance, alot of my friends are from the Gauangdong area, and they like to visit during the vacation time, which is normally either end of December to like the last week of January and/or last week of May to last week of August, as we are college students. But anyway, they like to go to a agent to purchase their tickets and/or accommodations. But isn't it just cheaper to purchase it online, ex: priceline?
