As I have had the same question, I came accross following hotels:

White Swan hotel
Garden hotel
Mariott China Hotel

However this info is 2 years old so I don't know if it is still valid.

In any case, don't try the Tianlun hotel as they have spies on every floor checking your activities

There are legit budget hotel chains that also offer short time rates (a few hours).  The two chains I know are Hanting Inns (www.htinns.com) and the 7 Days Inn (www.7daysinn.cn).  The rooms are very clean and comfortable.  You have to use the Chinese language site to check prices and make reservations.  During non-exhibition show dates, you can get a single bed room for under $200.  For short time, you should be able to get for $150 and under but are not advertised on website.  Afternoon rates are best.

Lucky for you, it is difficult for most foreigners to book a room at these budget hotel chains because these hotel chains can only be booked via their Chinese websites even though the 7 Days Inn is listed on the NYSE.  But that doesn't mean there will be a lot of vacant rooms available.  These budget hotels are popular with the local white-collar professionals, rich local kids with their gfs, and the bigger Canton Fair exhibitors.

7 Days Inn has many locations around the whole GZ city.  Any location is a quick, affordable taxi ride to downtown GZ.   You will notice the room rates have two prices. One is the rack rate and the other is the member's price.  If you think you will be travelling to China a lot, I would recommend you joining their memberships as these budget hotel chains are expanding rapidly throughout China.

Not really bro, many people use the internet or call up the hotel themselves.

Much easier to do some research and book hotel simultaneously.

I'd be interested on further thoughts on 'proper love hotels', similar to ones in Kowloon Tong in GZ. It's such a big city, i am sure there must be. So bros, any other recommendations?
