Until I can upon this board, when I heard of KTV in asia (specifically Japan) as a place where people would go to relax and have a few drinks and socialize after work. My question is are all KTV just are front for prostitution or not??? Are they like beauty parlors in Latin America. When I was on a trip to Costa Rica, my SO and I were walking around Jaco we went by a beauty/massage parlor with all these women in the back of the parlor. I mention to my SO boy that place was busy. When we got back to our hotel, I mention to the bartender at the hotel bar about the beauty/massage parlor and he laughs and tells me they're prostitutes. In Japan, most of the KTVs are really just a recreational place for friends of all age to gather, sing, enjoy and relax. Even in HK, there are places like California Red KTV (not to be confused with the CP one!) it's 100% family friendly, and i don't think you can find any WGs soliciting there... well, of course, WGs can meet their friends in California Red to sing and play too!

Same goes with the other asian countries. However, I've been told there are semi-legit places around too, especially in Taiwan. I haven't checked any of these out. Anybody? In Vancouver, there used to be a place called Hollywood North which was as close to WG KTV as you got for awhile. Awhile back, my buddy didn't know the etiquette of the establishment and asked one of the girls accompanying them if she's working. He got a death glare in return. Things have changed a bit since then, but being called a WG still has strong negative connotations over here. Almost all places over here are purely Karaoke. Oh how I miss HK.

#13 Post at 25-2-2010 13:07  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L In China, most KTVs are places not for sexual purposes.  Most people go there for fun with friends, family, colleagues, and business partners.  They do serve an assortment of wine, alcohols, foods, beverages, meals etc.  Most rooms I've been to are large enough for a small group of ppl to dance around.  And, they are not cheap (or at least the good KTV rooms).

#15 Post at 26-2-2010 11:52  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L like Hunter mentioned, yes, i'm probably exaggerating.. there are definitely alot of non-sleaze KTVs. in cities i frequent, both "clean" and "sleaze" KTVs are called KTV. some "sleaze" KTVs are called 娱乐城/俱乐部 Entertainment City/Club. "clean" KTVs will be called 量贩式 KTV.. i don't really know how to translate that.. it means something like "Pay for what you Eat" so basically if you see any KTV if the words 量贩式, this place is squeaky clean! the room charge is per hour. Small rooms for 4-6 pple is around RMB30~50 per hr. Middle rooms for 8~15 pple is around RMB40~60 per hr. VIP roooms for 20+ pple is around RMB100~200 per hr.  Attachment: Your usergroup does not have permission to access attachments

Their answer was a KTV, at least this one, can be as clean or sleazy as you want. The front area shows no sign of any potential actions that can occur in the private rooms. The "party girls" that appear in the front are all wearing classy, long evening dresses. The KTV establishment here knew my hosts as regulars so they immediately sent the perferred girls into our room. However, it is possible that right next door may be a wholesome family singing Disney tunes! What goes on behind closed doors...
