I also have a cousin who lives in and around the OC, he grew up there as well.  He has had some bias towards him, not as bad as other areas but the typical Ching Chong stuff from White kids growing up in the OC.  He also told me that a lot of mainland Chinese and Taiwanese are buying a lot of property in the OC and that the real estate agents are upping the prices for the Asians whenever we look at buying property in the OC.  He told me that a lot of the people now don't want too many "chinks" living in a predominantly white area, this was according to his real estate agent friend who is being stronghanded by sellers to not sell to chinks.  I've never been to the OC LA county areas but my cousin comes to NYC every few months and we hang out.

Sounds like the agent is full of crap.

"this was according to his real estate agent friend who is being stronghanded by sellers to not sell to chinks."
This statement alone, tells me it's full of crap, and the agent might be the racist one....
So if you can make an extra 10% off someone, you wouldn't? According to the agent, the seller is strong-arming?  The seller is getting out of there... why should he care? Especially if he's making more money...
Sounds like a hokey story....

If you HAVE money, agents WILL try and up the price, regardless of race. If an asian seller sees a rich white guy, you're telling me they won't try and up the price?
*sarcasm* OMG, ALL ASIANS ARE RACIST!!!! *sarcasm off*

Going to the night markets in HK, I see the same thing.
Locals get the cheapest price.  White foreigners, prices are highest.
Me?  I'm a "foreigner" that's of chinese blood. I get a middle price.
Does that make ALL the chinese people in HK racist?  NO!
It makes them opportunists just like everyone else (regardless of race).

As for you people who think MY experience is "anecdotal", I've been through all of OC.
Lived in Costa Mesa, and Tustin.  Worked in Irvine, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, and Newport.
And of course, I also go to shops in all the other cities.
Within those cities are "groupings" of whites, rich people, hispanics, surfer doods, and of course Asians. (not many blacks in OC)
Lived there for 25 years.
And not one time have I been "slighted" because of my race.

Here's a question to all of you that say whites are racist, etc.
How many of you asians were actually victims of racism?  Were you denied food at a restaurant?  Had to sit in the back of a bus? Drink from a different drinking fountain? Was shot at while driving?
That stuff back then, is true racism.
Now? not so much...

Also, my experiences are within bigger cities.
So lets compare those.
Suburbs, and hicktowns... they're a different story.
Every ethnic race, in small towns and villages, are fairly "guarded" towards others of different races.

To those that are saying that the Americans from hicksville middle America are racist....
Just imagine a small village in rural China.  A black man walking through the streets. You don't think that the mothers would grab their children and shoo them inside... away from the "ugly black man"?
Would that make them better or worse than rural Americans?

I guarantee you that any Black man in rural China would not be shooed away or mothers would grab their children and shoo them inside.  They would probably surround him in curiosity and wonder why he is there.  There aren't any real threats in rural China, a Black man would be far from a threat.  However, if I were walking in NYC at night by myself and saw a Black man, I would be automatically threatened, not because I am racist but statistically, if he were White, I would be safer.

So you are telling me you have never gotten a Ching Chong remark or a "go back to your country" remark your whole life?  Man, I need to move to the OC when I could afford a home there.

Yes... to get back on topic.....

I don't think Lucy Liu is particularly attractive.... I think it's the roles that she was playing, that made her attractive to a lot of people...

If I met Lucy Liu in the office, or as a check out chick I would still want to bed her.  It's the fact she is attractive that got her those roles, albeit in "white" Hollywood.

I also think that. From reading a lot of your posts I think you're an old guy who has very FIXED opinions that will NEVER change, regardless of what ANYONE else says. And you definitely cherry-pick to support your views. The other thing I don't like is that you have a habit of INFERRING what people really mean [even subconciously] and then using your inferrence to either agree or to argue against. You need to be more open-minded to the views of others, even if you disagree with them. No one, not even you, can be ALWAYS right.

There are assholes everywhere sexpert. But it's a mistake to see individual acts of meanness and stupidity as a general, society-wide hatred of Asians.

In any case, I'll bet a lot of these unpleasant experiences ABCs describe took place in school, or when you were kids. Kids are cruel and intolerant and they will pick up on anything to wound. I grew up in a very rough, working-class area, and went to all-white schools. It was bloody fucking war from the 1st grade, and not only did we call each other horrible names, we regularly beat the shit out of anyone who was the slightest bit different. For an Asian kid, it would have been hell, but it wouldn't have been racism.

Correct me if I'm wrong [as I'm sure you will  ] but what you're saying is that it would have been hell for Asian kids because they would have been regularly beaten up for being different - presumably their skin colour and facial features. But that's not racism. Does that make sense to anybody but Mars?

It makes perfectly good sense: an Asian kid would have been persecuted because he was different, not because he was Asian; just as the fat kid, and the really tall, skinny kid with the unusual red hair frequently had the shit kicked out of them. Racism requires some knowledge of what a race is, and those kids wouldn't have had any idea what an Asian was - they wouldn't have even known he was Asian, they would have just thought he was a weird looking kid.

The fat and skinny kid would grow up thinking all people suck, but the Asian would look back on those years and think he was maltreated because of racism, when, in fact, the bullies were just mean little assholes.

Ching Chong remark?  Do you mean when they do the stupid sounds, thinking it sounds like chinese?
Only when I was in grade school...
But I don't take it personally, since in school, everyone takes words from other ethnic races.
"Hey essey!  Que pasa?"  (acting hispanic)
"Sup dawg?"  (acting African American)
"Catch ya latah brah!" (acting like white surfer punks)
*random sounds that don't sound like chinese to us that know* (acting chinese)
None of it was malicious though... just kids being kids....  and it's not as if non-chinese kids know actual chinese phrases...

But by junior high, no one was doing that type of "chinese" sounds, because they know they sound stupid....
Maturity was setting in...

As for the "go back to your country" remarks... nope... not once....
Maybe I've just been surrounded by a diverse group.
From highschool onwards, I've been hanging out with hispanics, whites, and asians.  Not many blacks in OC, but when I was in UCLA, I was dorm buddies with a black guy for 2 years. (and he was a cool guy)

In the end, I think it's all about who you surround yourself with... and where you tend to go....

I totally agree with Marsupial....

Grade school is tough. And kids are mean.
I was the Chinese kid, but no one picked on me, because I was taller and stronger than all of the kids in school.  (THANK GOODNESS for early puberty)
Was a good 5'10" when I was in 8th grade.

But I remember the kid that was small for his age.... he was picked on constantly.
the stupid kid... picked on mercilessly
Another small kid... was "protected" by his "soccer group"... and actually was a "little bully"....except when I slapped him around.

Now that I think about it... grade school was like fricken prison....
only way not to be picked on was:
1) be the biggest/strongest
2) stay waaaaay under the radar
3) join a "group"

Anything else, expect to get raped in the shower room....
Oh wait... that's prison.... in grade school, expect to get picked on....

I've seen racism from people of most races.  Intolerance is just an expression of insecurity.  Racial lines get drawn because they are easy to define.

Back in the UK, white kids whose parents were from other western European countries never really got picked on for their race because you couldn't tell their ethnic origin.  Kids just look for differences in others and pick on that.

I must admit that I even did it once.  One kid in the school called me 'four eyes', and in my struggle to find a witty retort, the only thing I could think of was 'poo face'.  Yes, the boy was black, and I got into big trouble for that remark.  I was only about 5 years old, and I think it's good that I got punished by the teachers.

Now as I look back, I realise that I, and many other kids, look for a weakness or difference, anything that we think will hurt the other kid, and just pick on it when arguing.

Adults, on the other hand have no such excuse.  They pick on people along racial lines because it is easy to pigeon-hole everything and make sweeping statements like "The Japanese are two faced" (which my SO told me just a few months ago).  That is how people make sense of the world.  The problem is that people go too far with their generalisations.  The same black friend from primary school hated that every secondary teacher assumed that he'd be on the basketball team.

The next step after generalisations is prejudice.  In the UK, I heard people talking about not liking Asians (as in Pakistanis). and they'd say things like "He's Asian, but he's still a nice bloke." or "He's not like the others, our Ahmed".

Asians are not really the target so much now, it's the Polish and East Europeans "coming to take our jobs", before that it was Asians, then Black people, and then the Irish.  It's all nonsense really.

There's some anti-"Asian" prejudice in Australia too.

Have you ever seen this classic news report?

My list starts with all the cuties at the checkin counter of the Grand Hyatt Singapore.   And then includes about 1/3 of the Singapore Airlines stewardesses and just about every other female receptionist in HK.  I do like the girl next door look . . .

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.
