I dont want to be using my US phone no in HK for discretion reasons, as much as I dont want to try to talk to a papa on an international roaming. I think I read it somewhere in the forum but I cant find it again, that I should get a cheap pre-paid phone. How easy will that be ? Hoe long does it take ? WIll I get a cheap handset as well ?? I will be staying in TST area, so any pointers to where I could go, would really help. Thanks

You can find the pre-paid SIM cards in convenient stores or book stores at the airport, or numerous small cell phone shops through out Hong Kong. The cost is HK$100 (about US$12.5) and it gives you approx 300 min of local calls. The SIM cards are also available in higher denominations for more covered minutes. And do note that most pre-paid SIM you get in Hong Kong only work in HK, but there are a few special kinds that work both in HK and China (of course less minutes). Just ask the sales person about it.

Usually roaming charges for these cards in China isnt outrageous too, unlike the European simcards.

#9 Post at 5-2-2011 01:56  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Reply #1 thecoolhothunk's post When I was there a few weeks ago, I used the carrier 3.  It was ok, but I liked the fact that I can pay to get data on my iphone, so I had internet access of my phone when I was there.  I think the other carriers offer this as well, but I think the price of 3 was the best.  I just bought their $98 international data prepaid sim and they give you a bonus of like $50 on top as well.  Reception was not too bad and internet worked well.  Go to a 3 shop and check it out, just make sure your phone is unlocked.

This way I receive all calls to my regular cell phone, but also have local number for calling and texting. Very discreet as local calls and texts shows local call back number. Che'lu

#13 Post at 5-2-2011 20:19  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L You can also buy a cheap nokia handset for around HK$200 - so for under $300 HK you can have a phone and a sim.  The phone shops will also sell you the sim, switch the language to English for you and show you it all up and running. Easy!

There is a cheaper one, $48 I think but it's definitely red NOT green. The $20 difference  isn't a great deal but the call tarriffs for calls in hong kong of the red one is half that of the green.

Ask  a local, they will point you in the right direction no problem. Or buy a cheap handset. Pick one up new for HK$200 or less.

#19 Post at 17-2-2011 22:42  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Don't think 7/11 will do any unlocking.  Best thing is to take it to Mongkok on Argyle street opposite Ladies Market (sorry not that kind of ladies market which is kind of ironic on this website!!). That place (I think the name is Shintak center or something like that) is the best place in HK to unlock, buy, sell, rebuild, find missing parts etc...  for your phone.   And while you're waiting you can go right across the road on Sai Yeung Choi street for a quick punt while you wait!!!
