Passport copy? Safe in HK?

Hello,

I don't want to lose my passport. I think sauna is not responsible for lost or stolen.
Also I don't want to leave my passport in locker sauna in Hong Kong o 141 room.

I should leave my passport in hotel. I keep copy paper of passport in my wallet.
Do HK police accept copy passport if arrest o caught? I tell cop that my
passport leave in hotel...

Is it safe?
Thanks

What do you intend to do in Hong Kong???

If you intend to be a law abiding visitor (mongering is legal in Hong Kong) a passport copy is perfectly okay. If not, no passport is going to help you.

For us local residents we must carry our original ID cards at all time. But for English speaking visitors and local "gweilos" (no offence intended) I don't think they'd go through all the trouble to arrest you for no original papers. You see, their standard of English sucks.  You have nothing to worry about. Our cops are actually pretty nice and reasonable.

Welcome to Hong Kong.

Last paragraph:

http://www.hkclic.org/en/topics/ ... tity_cards/q3.shtml

"Under section 17C of the Immigration Ordinance , every Hong Kong resident who is aged 15 or above is required to carry proof of identity. This usually means an identity card. It is an offence to fail to produce proof of identity on demand to a police officer or immigration officer. However, in practice, persons are unlikely to be prosecuted if they are found without an identity card when they are near their home.

With respect to children, there is no obligation to apply for an identity card until the age of 11 ( section 17C of the Immigration Ordinance ).

Visitors who are staying in Hong Kong for not more than 180 days are not required to apply for identity cards ( regulation 25(d) of the Registration of Persons Regulations ). Nevertheless, such visitors are strongly advised to carry proof of identity (e.g. passports) with them, otherwise they may be detained by the police or immigration officers for verification of their status."

bah don't worry about losing it is you do , you can STILL get home, I'm fairly sure HK has an consulate and or embassy of almost every EU/US nation , probably not African or South American..

As a bit of relief my mate lost his passport in Lagos Nigeria he still managed to get back home , he got the embassy to give him a reference number which was forwarded to the UK immigration agency was kept for about an hour ontop (they keep you waiting in line for 2 hours anyway) to prove who he was (UK driving licence etc) and he was let into the country.

Life is short very...
