Speaking of avatars, how many posts do I have to make before I can upload a custom gif/jpeg? Those standard avatars are kind of childish.

the right to bear arms

Durian,

The right to bear arms to protect liberty, life, and property is a cornerstone of democracy in the U.S.A. It is not the presence of guns that causes violence, but the absence of nurture. For example, in Hong Kong, the murder rate is 0.6 per 100,000 population. There is severe gun control in Hong Kong. Many policemen (& women) do not carry guns. In the US, there is a lot less gun control but Asians in the US have almost the exact same murder rate: 0.5 per 100,000 population. More than any other group, Asians nurture there children. However, the murder rate in major US cities is very high. For example, Dallas had 20 murders per 100,000 population. That's 40 times more dangerous than Hong Kong! Many states in the US have a "three strikes" law. If you commit 3 felonies, then you get life imprisonment. Rather than leaving witnesses and getting caught, felons who are committing their third felony would kill you so as to leave no witnesses. This law was meant to protect us, but in reality has made the streets  more dangerous. I worked in South Dallas and I always carried a gun in a paper sack with my finger on the trigger when I walk to my car. Once, a man with a gun jumped out from behind a car and I shot him three times. The police arrested ME (not the criminal who jumped me!) and I spent the night in jail. The next day, my wife found a lawyer, bail bondsman, and bailed me out of jail. I then had to appear in court and hire expensive attorneys to defend me. This costed me thousands of dollars and many hours of lost work time. I got into trouble because I didn't wait for him to speak before I shot him. If I waited, then I would not have been able to get off the first shot. I would be dead. I'm sick and tired of these liberal polititians. Two lives ended that day. If you measure quality of life and how advanced/civilized a society is by the lifespan, look no further. Hong Kong has the highest life expectancy of any city in the world. You are living in Atlantis.

Stats are from;
http://christianparty.net/washingtondc.htm
The guy who made this webpage is a racist jerk, but considering that he is racist, if he says something good about a minority, it must be true. So, I trust his statistics about Asians being very non-violent both in the US and H.K.

http://www.dallascrime.com/2004crimestats.html
Yes, this stat is four years out of date, but I couldn't find anything newer.

http://www.criminal-law-lawyer-s ... ee-strikes-law.html
I'm not sure that Texas has a 3 strikes law, but there is a Federal 3 strikes law for federal crimes.

currency values

Hong Kong has the highest education rate and the highest life expectancy of any city in the world. It also has one of the lowest violent crime rates. The currency is 50% undervalued, so your dollar or euro will go a lot further here. This is as close to Utopia as you are going to get.

Have fun,
drjoker.

If HK is the safe society you say it is, and if you believe Asians are less likely to commit violent crime because of unique cultural values, why do you want to carry weapons here in HK?

re-read my post

Please re-read my post. I said that I normally don't carry any weapons. I only do so if I'm mongering in a strange neighborhood where I'm unsure of my safety. 99% of the time, I never carry any weapons at all in H.K. I'm probably being overly cautious, but better safe than sorry.

Aren't you the same guy who won't touch a naked pussy without first donning surgical rubber gloves. And you also want to carry weapons when mongering so as to feel safe. Dr Joker you certainly do have 'issues'. You treat getting laid like visiting some tropical disease research center in a war zone.

I'm an American and I've never owned a gun, and no one I know owns a gun; but then all of my friends are members of a minority - we're sane.

ah sorry mate... just generalizing... which is bad i know

... just that the gun culture in the states is very openly discussed and even to an extent, glamorized..... being able to legally purchase such powerful firearms in most states raises an eyebrow as to why and what the ****

I am not from the gun lobby. (and yes, I am a Chinese-American) I have had the opportunity to handle and fire firearms, but all in a controlled environment and for sporting purposes. Although I live in a very safe neighborhood, I do know people who own guns around me. (and I do know many Asian-Americans who own guns for protection) My personal view is that a gun in an unfamiliar hand is a deadly weapon that can be accident prone. The person who taught me how to handle my first rifle was a Vietnam veteran gun shop owner. He made me read through a 30-35 pages handbook and tested me on my understanding of the content. (basics for handling firearms) He then taught me the mechanics of the rifle before taking me out to the range. (I was a high school senior at the time, and a foreign student) It was an interesting one year in my life, accompanying him to shoot prairie dogs in order to help the farmers. Later, he taught me trap and clay shooting with shotguns. He taught me how to handle handguns last. (and he told me that he hope I will never have to use one to defend myself) I ended up on the rifle team of my college in NYC. (most NYker will never believe this, but yes, there is at least one rifle range in one of the college in the city) Target shooting is a labor intensive sport. Because of my eyesight, I can only participate with contact lenses and that often caused problems. I quit sports shooting after college and has never touched a rifle again.  However, I did enjoy my times at the Chinese gun ranges around SZ. Brought back fond memories. I feel lucky that I am in a town where things are pretty safe. However, I can understand those who feel safer with a firearm on them. My only caution is, please handle the gun like a professional.
