I don't know about Ding Tai Fung in Taiwan, but the one in the US is just so-so, and it is expensive compare with other local restaurant.

my cousin went to the one in the US and said it is not as good as the one in taiwan and not as authentic.
I give my vote to Maxim's. I went to the kowloon one and it was very good.
btw, does Din Tai Fung in TST have takeout? don't wan't to bother with the wait.

I also heard about Tim Ho Wan, the chef got a michelin star at this restaurant not the previous one.
it's also famous now to be the cheapest 1 michelin star restaurant in the world.

the chef/owner was a chef at Lung King Heen before but was tired by the high class restaurant so open this restaurant by his own

There used to be a Harry Ramsdens in Wan Chai but I guess it closed down. You can get some reasonable fish n chips in the English style pubs in Stanley, on the seafront. Probably also in English style pubs in Wan Chai and elsewhere but I haven't tried them.

The place I have been taken, by an UK friend, to is called "Chippy".  It is on G/F, 51A Wellington St, close to Lan Kwai Fong.  It is not so easy to find, so their phone number is 2523 1618.  They make a very good fish and chips which is priced under HKD100.  Unlike most places, they always have at least 2 types of fishes you can choose for your fish.

I have taken my friends all over US to Ding Tai Fu and none of them like it.  Most of my friends have been to the one in Taiwan and they get surprises over different quality of food they get in the one located in South CA.  I think it has to do with the prepreation and cook rather than the ingredients used, but I am no expert.

What happened was that when they first opened up, they prepared the Xiao Loong pao the same way as in Taipei... and had long lines waiting to get in.

Then the LA times did a review... and an expose on it .... opining that the reason why the pao is so good is that the "juice" in it was mostly lard!  And then went ahead and ran with the story and even had a Laboratory test for how much Fat/lard content these li'l burst of flavor contained.

Well, California being Californai and how everybody is very health conscious - Business literally died and the owners had had to modify the ingredients... thus the lame excuse of a xiao loong pao they are now serving there.

Oh well.....

I didn't know that, so the Ding Tai Fu in Taipei served lard in the xiao long pao?

No wonder it takes so good.

LA times still recommend Ding Tai Fung

I ate there in LKF recently - the fish was very good, nice light / crispy batter, but the chips left much to be desired.  If you have to have fish and chips thought, I'm not sure of anywhere else that do it.

Where do you guys recommend going for Peking Duck?

As you can see, I go out to eat alot.

For Peking Duck, I would recommend the Peking Garden Restaurant in Alexandria House, Central.  There are many Peking Garden restaurants in HK, but this particular location makes the best Peking Duck.  I always take guests there for the duck.  Also every night a chef comes out to put on 'making chinese noodles' show and if you are a foreigner, you are guaranteed to get a sample of the uncooked noodles.  Also if you like making duck soup, you can ask the staff to save the bones for you.

for peking duck

the best is at the Hyatt Macau (city of dream) it's roast with the traditional method, it's around hkd320 for a whole duck

most of restaurant in hk used the cantonese "hand-fried" cooking to make the cripsy skin, not really authentic

WOW, Harry Ramsdens was in wanchai back in my high school days and that was a long long time ago. I enjoyed the fish and chips there but its been gone for more than 8 years I think.

I did go to the Peking Garden Restaurant in TST, in the Star House Building, upstairs, near the ferry.  280HKD for a whole duck if I remember correctly.  To be honest, the peking duck was nice, but not markedly better than what we can get in my home country.  I found that they don't really serve you the whole duck, as there is still plenty of meat on the carcass that goes "missing", as they take it back to the kitchen.  In Australia, they will serve you a second course, either fried rice or noodles, with the remaining duck "scraps".  Seems better value that way.

Depends where you want to eat?
On the HK or Kowloon side and your price range honestly.
Dim Sum can vary from 10-20 dollars USD a head to 40-50 dollars a head.

Try searching www.openrice.com
It's a recently very popular site with food reviews and its also in english!

I would say Maxim group is always a safe bet for beginners, always clean and has decent standards

Actually with the meat that goes "missing", you are supposed to be able to make other dishes with it such as a soup using the bones, and/or minced duck with lettuce wrap. Usually they would ask you if you wanted this done or not and these dishes would be cheaper than a normal dish.

Wait... openrice is in English now? When it was only in Chinese, the reviews it had were usually good. Do you know when did they add the English section? In the last few months?
