Just a quick poll, how many of you doesn't speak Cantonese or Mandarin at all, and manages only with English skills?

I have been in HK for a while and have a very basic understanding of cantonese.  Learning Mandarin so I have a basic understanding of that.  So when it comes to girls that can speak both, I give it a mish mash during the conversation.  I can get by with English and my trusty translation program

Polls are created under the poll thread...  Not sure if newbies can create polls.  Go give it a shot.

I tried already the polls section, but I couldn't see a button for creating the poll. Probably not allowed yet.

The only two essentials are the money and the time. Once the door is opened and she sees you standing there, their is no misunderstanding your intentions.

I completely agree.  In every country I have visited, money is the universal language to make your intentions crystal clear.  And sometimes more money helps her language skills improve rapidly; such as in Mexico.

I am a ABC but I speak fluent American English, Cantonese, Toi-Shan, Hoi-Ping.  I also can speak a little bit of Hawaiian, Mandarin, Japanese.   It does help when you have the $$$ and can speak the native language of the girl.

That's a lot of languages for an ABC to learn.  Good job!  I wish I was able to learn that many languages growing up.  But yeah in the end money talks and that's all that matters.  Hard to sign that you want the red rope treatment though.

LOL.  I'm the same ABC way.  On my recent trip, I was able to survive with my "Chinglish" as well.

I think knowing conversational Cantonese and/or English, you can still have a grand ol' time.  But, from my recent stop over in Macau and in anticipation of doing some punting in the PRC next year, I've vowed to pick up some Mandarin.  I don't think it's necessary to close the deal, but it'll just be more enjoyable to relate to the girls and get the GFE (if that's your cup of tea).

Cantonese is like the native tongue.  Same with Toi-san (dad) and hoi-ping (mom).   Mandarin was learned in the first year of high school, Japanese was learned during the next 3 years of high school.  I own and run a Internet Service Provider in Hawaii so picked that up from the business partners and customers.  So I think in reality, what you need is money and a common language so you can understand each other.  Would be weird to try to explain something with hand gestures since that will eat up clock time. LOL.

Mainly English and Canto, but with French and Mandarin basic/intermediate skills also.

Canto I find that many Mandarin speakers can understand a decent amount, esp. those who have lived in Southern China for any amount of time.
