All the threads on Sinking Ships and Scams has reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask bros:

How well do you protect your Identity in actual practice?  I mean in theory we'd all have CIA/MI5-style aliases while punting.  But we know thats not practical.

Do you use a "Nom de Punt" (i.e. an alias name)?

Do you have a punting phone?

Do you carry any ID  or CC's on you?

I mean protecting ID is probably more important to those with SO's.  But, I'm curious how much of an Identity Firewall any bros put up when punting.  

I know many HK bros, with and without SO's, who carry their normal wallets everywhere while punting--like going on holiday.  

Maybe its my own Western-culture induced paranoia, but I find that almost crazy.  I punt on a "Need to Know" basis I guess.

For me, in China/Macau, my Passport/Wallet/Iphone stays locked in the hotel safe (I know not always the safest place, but better than unsecured).  I carry only a punt phone and cash (just enough for 2 days worth if mongering or so) and one CC (for emergencies, but may reconsider even this practice) with me, and punt on first name only basis.  If asked my surname, I will fabricate one--as its really not their business.  

Haven't had the opportunity to punt in HK yet, but I figure I'd do the same.

Nah...there's never too much precaution you can take when you're punting. For me, I take the following precautions:

1. I do have a punting phone. I never ever use my real phone number for punting purposes.
2. When I correspond with WGs by email, I use a separate punting email address.
3. I do have a "nom de punt" that I use. I used to give different names until i lost track of who i was to diff WGs. So now, I just stick to 2 code names.
4. When punting in Macau sauna, it's safe to bring out cash, etc and keep in the lockers. However, when punting elsewhere, I do keep less cash on me and make sure that either a) my wallet/pants are always in sight or b) the girl is never left alone with my wallet.
5. I stay away from shady areas where I don't feel safe, eg some alleys in Bangkok, etc.

MGals I see regularly have my real first name and my punting phone number. That's as close as I get though... to other WGs I see I'm an alias.

i never gave my real name and real contact to any of the WGs i punt here in Manila.
i know these WGs also dont give their real name and they change contact numbers most of the time.

i used to come up with fake names...
but after awhile, i can't keep track of all the lies i tell to everyone..
so now i just use my real name.
and most of the mama-sans know my name anyway, so no point lying to the WGs.

Don't bother with the fake name myself, But do only carry 2000 - 3000 HKD when out and about. And of course my punting phone.
For the last couple of years I have taken to carrying a pre loaded Card and usually keep it topped up with around 10000 HKD, so that I can draw extra funds if needed when out and about. Card has no name or ID on it.

For punting in China, do you guys bring any ID paper with you ? I am always worried that during a check in a sensitive place (even if I am not caught doing anything bad), a foreigner without his passport may get some problems.

Always use a fake name and always the same (too dumb to remember 2). Never ever ever pay by card, always have cash on me, enough for 2 punts just in case (but havent punt for a while now, only massage). Have a android phoneand use the app that blocks the names and phones, but actually only gave my number to wg twice but for other reasons.
Would be less careful with walk in as most of them are locals or with visa so less chances they'll run away with your trousers (your at their place after all!) but with a regular wg, would always keep my eyes on my stuff.

After a while, no biggie at all..............WGs in this part of the world are very professional and probably they have the market to continue surviving and doint their thing.
They dont barge into your work place or home unwelcome.
Calls/ SMS (now using Wahssapp!)  that;s normal, just keep a separate phone and number.

As long as we know and able to hide our shit from wife/GF.

I dont feel comfortable giving my real name, so I just give my general Chinese sir name. Anyway, most of the Chinese WG I met does not know English, so I never gave my English name.

If you are a tourist or a visitor to the country, it doesn't make too much of a difference if you are using your real name. However, it is still good if you carry a different phone solely for such uses. But if you mean in your own country then more precautions have to be taken. Depending on your country laws and practices, some requires your real details to be registered even for pre-paid cards and if the state authorities decide to make a sweep then good luck to you! *touch wood*

It doent matter. The WG used nickname or work name all the time.
They dont really mind if you are using one yourself.

Fake name if there are regulars. Real name if it's a one off.
My Asia ###s are generally turned off, so it's not like they can FIND me even if they wanted to...unless i'm in asia and WANT to be found. haha
I carry my driver's license with me....which fools enough officials that it's actually ID that I don't generally have to worry about using my ACTUAL ID.
And always use cash. If you need to exchange in a pinch....rather lose a little and use a major hotel lobby.

I use fake but real telephone number, I bring another phone when I visit WG and go to mainland, business go business, I guess the WG in hk rule this rules and will not come too close with their clients after working hours, unless the girl is try make long term relationship with him

For protection, I like to keep my expensive hobby a secret. Flying over, eating, hotels, expensive, i guess I spend over 3500 USD each trip.

I am NOT married or have a serious girlfriend. I'm worry more about my reputation among my friends and relatives.  I'm old and older than most guys on this forum. Two mongering guys, who are married, tells me at my age who cares. It doesn't matter and it's your life.

If I do get marry, someone might tell my future wife  or tell rumors about my past. She will be very suspicious and will never trust me. She will most likely think I must be still doing it.  That is way I don't like meeting or going with my close friends or meeting people who live close to me. Some have big months and rumors will start to spread. You might call me paranoid. To me it's better to be safe from the possible of being blackmailed by some asshole later.

Similar to others I use a pseudonym mainly

From others experiences I also punt away from possible family/friend connections (e.g. if I know someone who works in an area I avoid - it is not worth the chance).

punting phone (not just a sim) with no stored numbers (deleted frequently), just enough money to use/lose (in the case of a bad experience).

Above all I work on the idea that by being forgettable and respectful I earn myself some anonymity, I follow my gut by not punting in bad areas/in situations where I have a bad feeling, don't carry anything of particular value that would lead back to me and keep the possessions I do need in the same room/in eyesight.

The only issue would be in places where I am required to carry ID by law - I stay discreet and keep it individually.

But many banks offer same kind of card. Works well for me as I travel to several countries and just load with GBP. Cash drawn out is at bank rates not Tourist rates.

curious in asia do people wear hats to go mongering?  I swear so many people where I am wear hats.  I suppose they think it helps keep them lower profile.
