HK is definitely safe to stroll during the night but of course you can take the necessary precaution of not carrying too much cash in your pocket/wallet.

It seems the Indian and Pakistani tailors have become less aggressive in recent years.  They used to grab guys by the arm.  Now, they only follow them a bit.

Their sales tactics may be annoying, but I guess it works.  Otherwise, they wouldn't do it.

If they get grabby, I hope they get reported to the cops.  If a few of them get deported, they'll all tone down their aggressiveness.

My first trip to Rio was in 1998 and I remember the advice to never walk after midnight, but to always take a taxi. At night, the city looked scary, even from inside a taxi.

My most recent trip to Rio was last year and I was pleasantly surprised. The city looked cleaner and much safer. My 2 wingmen and I walked about half a mile, a couple of nights, around 2am. We never had any problem. We even saw some local couples out that late.

OTOH, I never felt safe in the Philippines, AC or Manilla. In fact, I had an incident in AC. I took a WG from one of the clubs, out dancing. Well, she was dressed like a WG and she was hot. At the disco, some locals got pissed at her for some reason and started harassing us. It did not faze her at all. She promptly called security and they got all that group of locals thrown out of the disco. I was concerned that they would wait for us outside. Nothing happened when we left the place but that was a close call for me that night.

Angeles City is fine if you stick on the main drag.  There's too many cops, tourists and ordinary Filipinos for anyone to do anything.  I don't think that "close call" had much to do with the city itself but, instead, the type of guys that bargirls would normally attract or socialize with.

But Manila is a little hairy.  Like what you said about Rio, I felt unsafe in Manila even in a taxi.  The city seems like on the verge of a riot.  Philippines is a fantastic mongering destination.  But I urge visitors to avoid Manila and to go there only to transit elsewhere.  I was in Cebu and at no time did I feel unsafe.

In Cebu certain areas are really unsafe.Like downtown Colon.Even "whiter" filipinas get attacked.

I spent some time on the corner of Colon and Pelarez around 10:00pm to midnight and felt quite safe.  There's lots of vehicular traffic and pedestrians.

However, I know just northeast of that corner, near Sanciangko and Junquera, there are lots of pimps with his inventory of girls huddled in dark corners.  Yes, that area did look a bit scary and I didn't dare enter at night.

Overall, I found Cebu to be an oasis of peace and security compared to Manila.

HK is one of the safest cities I've every visited.


BUT....

Just like any major city there are good and bad people around corners and you need to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings, possessions and the people around you.

If you're worried take a cheap wallet, phone and camera with you. Keep just enough money in your wallet to do what you want to do (and spread a few notes in different pockets), don't put more than you can afford to lose on your travel card, use a cheap mobile and back up your travel photo's (if you take any) every night on a portable HD or something similar. After a few days you'll start to feel more confident with the area.

HK is the one of the cities that practically never sleeps, always people milling about. So unless you plan on looking for trouble or extremely unlucky, one has nothing to worry about.

No, Hk is perfectly safe, you get hammered in the purple curtains, never robbed unless you act stupdly (but really, really stupidly). Its totally safe (but still take the usual precautions ie dont leave your wallet...)

I been to HK 3 times. Its pretty safe and convenient.

If you are really worried, just dress like common folks and look less like tourist and don't lug around expensive stuffs.

I see more police patrols there than Melbourne but as long as you don't do anything stupid and abide by the law, no one gonna give a shit what you do. You can even ask them for direction
