Mandarin/Cantonese Films...

I'm loading up my Netflix cue. Can anyone send me a list of worthwhile Chinese language films. Maybe a few of the more obscure ones would be nice also. GT2

The.Forbidden.Legend.Sex.and.Chopsticks. 1 and 2 which is in cantonese
Why not also Sex and Zen something like that
But note that it is erotic movie, not real porn.
Erotic should be fake the penetration when porn is really doing it.

well, to keep on topic, 2 great must-see mongering HK films are Naked Ambition and Men Suddenly In Black.  Also, One Night In Mongkok is an excellent movie on the MK brothel and 141 scene and shows Cecilia Cheung at her absolute best.

Is that the one where Athena Chu is a washed up WG and caught some disease?  She still looks hot.

If you are into semi arsty films, In the Mood for Love is quite good.  RedCliff 1 and 2 are must sees, explosive shit but I would suggest you do a bit a research before watching because it can get quite confusing if you don't have an idea what is actually going on during the time.  The Guan Yee Gor in that movie was incredible, was that dude a China actor?  He had the face, movements and attitude down pat.

You might be in trouble. I recall, you give Netflix a list of movies you want to watch and they will send them.

I believe Netflix carries only very few Chinese films. I'm talking about movies in Chinese with and without English/French sub titles. I am assuming you what to learn some Chinese at the same time with the sub titles.

Yes, Red Cliff 1/2 s good. I also like the movie called "The Killer". There are also some good Triad movies. I don't think these movies are in Netflix.

Some movies that should be on Netflix are by Jackie Chan, ( sorry I'm not a JC fan ).  Some of Jet Li films should be on Netflix too.

Like bro mrp suggested, Infernal Affairs (well, the entire trilogy) is pretty good.  Not really obscure though since Scorsasi remade it into a Hollywood film.  If you want Mandarin films, I suggest looking up the filmography of Chinese stars.  Some don't get a lot of exposure outside of Asia, but their work is quite good.  Vicki Zhao Wei, for example, is a pretty good Chinese actress and has done a number of really good movies.  Many of Gong Li's films, before she got famous internationally, are pretty big classics in Asia too.  The only danger is that you may need to be familiar w/ Chinese literature or history in some cases such as a film called Green Tea, starring Vicki Zhao Wei.  My understanding is that it's an adaptation of a short story/book.

Good list of Chinese movies.

I don't think most of the movies are on Netflix.  Netflix has very few foreign films. Again, I believe he wants to give Netflix a list of movies for them to send to him to watch.

I'm a big fan of Gong Li - who became famous for her roles in the films of Zhang Yimou

Ba wang bie ji - Farewell My Concubine
Ju Dou
Hong gao liang  - Red Sorghum
Da hong deng long gao gao gua - Raise the Red Lantern

also 2046 directed by Wang Jiawei was good

All of the above films won numerous awards

Infernal Affairs 1, Ip Man, Naked Ambition as some bros suggested.

I also like Fearless, and the almost Shakespearean classic 'Fight Back to School'

all the ones you listed are artsy-fartsy movies - the type of movies you would watch with friends to show off that you're sophisticated, but the type of movie that if you were by yourself, you'd rather eat nails than to watch this type of movie.

Man, that just means you have different tastes than Mars.  I've seen a couple of those and also think they're quite good.  It just depends on what you like or are in the mood for.  We're just giving grantorino2 options. No one said he has to pick those ones to watch.  He can obviously also look at reviews of the movies before he watches.

That's true.  I personally don't know what Netflix carries.  I dl movies usually if it's not something that should be seen in theatres to fully appreciate (most recent example prob being Avatar).

No, those are actually all films I watched for my own pleasure. If I hadn't enjoyed them, I wouldn't have recommended them. If that makes me an artsy-fartsy kind of guy, mea culpa.

Best director of all time: Ingmar Bergman.

aren't you Asian?  Man I know ZERO Asian folks who like those type of movies except for the type that I just described.  There's a reason why all of Zhang Zimou's movies are box office death.

What on earth made you think I'm Asian?

That a film isn't commercially successful says nothing about it's quality. The same is true of literature. Hollywood makes crap because it sells, not because they don't know any better. Dumbing-down, reducing everything to the lowest common denominator so as to maximize ticket sales, is what the mass-market entertainment business is all about. How else can you explain all the garbage on TV and in the theater - the common man has shit for brains. Quality in a film has always been a commercial liability.

Whether or not a person is an Asian has no bearing on whether or not a movie is good or not.  Everyone has different tastes.  We're just offering suggestions.  People who do things like watch so-called "artsy-fartsy" movies to make themselves look better are just posers.  I watch what I think might be good.  Hell, tons of Asians think 2012 is a good movie, but I thought it was shit just by looking at the trailer and from my friends' comments.  Just b/c I think it's crap, doesn't mean everyone else has the same view.  You obviously prefer something else, so just offer grantorino2 your suggestions.
