Wrong. In the SF Bay Area, Asians are now what Jews used to be in NYC -- "how did they get so much money? must be through dishonesty and eating [for jews: babies, for asians: dogs]." Parents hate their kids having compete with those Asian kids in school. Etc. Lots and lots and lots of anti-Asian sentiment.

Get a life, bro. You confuse envy with hatred. I asked an ex-Taiwanese GF who's been living in the States for 20 years if she's ever felt discriminated against, she said never. A friend over here in Taiwan spends half of his time in LA and he too reports never having experienced racial hatred. twiceAweek lived for a while in the mid-West - hardly a metroploitan area - and he's on record as saying he never experienced any problems. I've never heard anyone in the States say anything negative about Asians, which certainly isn't the case with blacks or Latinos. The media doesn't run reports on the racial problems experienced by Asians - except for Vietnamese shrimp fisherman - because there aren't any. I'm sure it was tough growing up not looking like Brad Pitt - but hey, life's a bitch.

Yeah, we get the same shit all over the northeast.  Asian hate is incredible here as well, but apparently Mars lives in la-la land where Asians are loved and appreciated all over the US.  You should see the anti-Asian shit in schools here, only recently has the Asian kids been fighting back against other students and teachers who treat Asians unfairly.  We are always going to be second rate citizens, no matter how hard we try to assimilate, we will always be sneaky chinks in the USA.

In any case here we are; in this thread we've come from dumb white guys fuck ugly Asian women, to Asians don't like white guys fucking their women, to white people hate Asians.   

you want to talk about hate?  There might not be outward hate against Asians, but it's there.  Look at what happened after the Rodney King verdict.  The fucking blacks decided to spew there hate against the Korean community.  Why?  Just because they were jealous that hard working Koreans could economically go ahead of a bunch of lazy group of blacks.  

I lived for many years in Chicago, and the Chicago that I lived in in the 70s and 80's was one of the most segregated, hateful cities in the US.  Nothing like going out to suburbia in those days and having people stare at me and make the usual Asian noises.

Having now lived in mostly Asian Northern California for so many years, I've weaned off of the racism, but my guess is that it's still out there.

I thought the Korean shop-owners were targeted by the rioting Blacks because they are the ones who have the shops in the ghettos. (And the Koreans are pretty racist themselves, btw.)

In any case, people are by nature racist - and this is just as true of Asians - but talking about white hatred of Asian Americans is ridiculous.

aiya!  I think many of you miss the point of my post #94.  Beauty standard of usa is not about the different ethnic groups there but about how it is a reflection of the white male who for hundred of years were the dominant group.  I am sure there is a thread out there talking about "Hispanic women only non-hispanics consider hot"' in a latin american forum, or "Black women only non-blacks consider hot"' in an African forum, etc.  When you travel to different countries and have a chance to talk to the locals, some of the stuff you will hear about your own ppl can be intriquing and funny.  Like in some African countries, the big and fat women are considered sexy and they laugh at some of the african-americans girls for being so aneroxic skinny when they are actually not so by usa standards.

Basically this thread is supposed to be about the different beauty standards that are used to evaluate Asian women, not about the various racism that can be found around the world.

That was the point of the "Black is Beautiful" movement of the 60's and 70's - black women no longer straightening their hair, etc. - to regain control of the dialogue and assert their own claim to beauty and throw off 200 years of white domination; domination that was not just legal and economic, but aesthetic as well.

There's no doubt that ideas of what is beautiful have changed tremendously in the States as the population has become more racially diverse and sophisticated. And a good thing too.

From my experience most racial discrimination I've faced comes from white males, spanning all age ranges.

At most maybe a handful times I've goten some kind of racial reaction from white females, typically 45+ from midwest/suburbia usually. still pretty uncommon though.

Asian girls are "exoticized" often by white males so they dont face alot of discrimination though I'm sure female->female racial tensions exists. Partially that's why a female POV is necessarily a fair representation of the state of racial affairs. I believe alot of racial tensions stem from guys (of all races).

I grew up in San Francisco, probably the most populous asian city in the US and I still have plenty of accounts of facing racial discrimination (from blacks/mexicans/whites/etc)

You know underneath it all, these ideas/opinions form the basis of the different perceptions we have on the board. its not that off topic

Doghead I would only alter that comment a little bit by saying that the racial diversity of the U.S. has widened its generally accepted standard of beauty.  Just because caucasians were the largest single group doesn't mean they've absolutely dictated the standards, sure they may get more 'marketing votes' such that you see more billboards selling to white guys, but it's still a melting pot and there's lots and lots in the media that is directed at the multi-cultural in the U.S.  Just look at the cartoon offerings coming from Disney in the last 10 years, if anything the white centric offering is distinctly under-represented.  So on a mass market basis it's probably more fair to say that things are biased toward the white male rather than dictated by the white male.  Nothing necessarily wrong with that, it just reflects the market reality.

As to punting and beauty and all that, I still say that the multi-cultural melting pot of the U.S. gives everyone here a broader taste for what is beautiful.  And yes, I'd do Lucy Liu in a heartbeat.

Just because one race looks down their nose at the choices of another race doesn't mean they have greater taste, just greater intolerance.
