Job questions

Hi

A bit OT, but the HK job market quite simply how prevaliant are fake jobs? onsites like jobsdb.com  ? , in that in the UK fake jobs are endemic  you may search a website 100 jobs come up of which only 4-5 are real.

Problem is I've been applying for jobs off jobsdb.com and at the same time been getting incredible numbers of telemarketers, I pick up all calls as it may well be somebody asking me to go to an interview, but then in HK picking up calls costs money, and considering I am on the other side of the planet it must cost a fair bit more.

What say you sex141 crew?

Thanks

A problem for hirers (me) too. Job seekers are so embittered that they are suspicious about anyone contacting them about a job opening, thinking it must be a scam.

My suggestion is as soon as possible, try to arrange to meet in person. Anyone who won't meet in person is likely a scam. (Similarly, when I'm trying to hire people, I try to meet them in person as soon as possible, to assure both them and me.)

Another problem is that some legitimate companies post job advertisements when they themselves do not have such an opening. Why? Sometimes to lure competitors' staff in and try and pry privileged information out of them. But sometimes also as a cheaper form of advertising in a magazine or online (ie. they're hiring, so they must be doing alright).

Also because of the nature of applying for a work visa for foreigners, companies have to proved that they have posted an advert in a local website/newspaper and could not find someone so had to hire someone foreign.   So some of those ads may be fake because the companies already have someone (a friend or relative who is a foreign passport holder) in mind but have to go through the necessary steps for the govt.

Jobsdb.com's postings, I feel, aren't fake in a malicious sense, but more a scam for agencies to expand their own respective DBs.  Ultimately, whether or not it's a real or fake posting can prob be ascertained by the level of info given, i.e. Company Name/Address/Secondary Posting by HR Agency (all things that can be confirmed).  I'd say if you're really concerned, just stick to the Classified Post.  Those should be legit.

What would the scam be in a fake job posting?  Solely to collect information for telemarketers?  Or something more sinister?

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

In the UK it is sometimes just agencies harvesting CVs, sometimes it is crooks gathering data to phish for peoples details (an awful lot of people put on their CVs name address DOB even NI number).

Whenever I apply for a job though it seems I get a huge number of telemarketing calls (UK is nuts as it is possible to be charged a massive amount for picking up the phone)

With address, DOB, and NIC somebody can empty your bank account.

apparently you haven't been scammed by a fake job yet........It's more sinister actually in that they will ask for some type of money before you get to start. When I hear about them needing money first, that's the cue to say to them "Fuck off asshole". When in the world do you ever need to send money first to get a job. that's a fake job scam right there my friend so beware

Yeah, never been scammed by a job posting agency before.  I can't imagine any professional falling for something so transparent as a request for upfront cash, but then again I'm astounded at all the people who fall for the Nigerian checking account scam.

especially nowadays with the economy as fucked up as it is, there'll be more innovative ways to scam people but the cue is always the same, send money first, get what you want later.

Yeah but when people are desparate and or greedy it overides their common sense.
