Tears for Fears Concert

Tears for Fears is coming to HK in a few days and I haven't decided to go or not as they really only have just a few popular songs.  Have any of you bros seen them live in concert?  Is it worth it and should I go?  Regardless of the tickets cost, it is all standing and I am not sure I can stand for 2 hours.

I have seen them in concert before - 20+ years ago.  Decent concert, nothing to write home about.  They must be 50+ years old by now.

They also had the hit 'Shout'. Saw their recent picture and don't know how good the concert would be when they're 20 years older. Case in point is Sting. Watched him perform live twice. It was boring.

sowing the seeds of love, is probably their best song.  I would check it out if it wasn't too expensive.

I had to check the date of this post. I thought someone had dragged up an old posting from 1990. I was impressed that the forum had been around that long.

Same thing applies to the Peter and Paul from Peter, Paul and Mary concert.  They haven't had a hit since the 60's and only a couple at best.

But Peter, Paul and Mary are a different story. They're in their 70's. At least the two members of Tears for Fears would not require wheelchairs to get on stage.

I will pay to watch the cast of Glee perform on stage though, including the guy in wheelchair.

I mentioned about it in passing while watching the ad on TV and the next day the missus comes home with tickets. hmmm I wonder if there's an ulterior motive behind it. So look like I'm going tonight. I hope they don't run out if breath and collapse like Air Supply nearly did at Harbourfest!

Went to the concert last night. They had a bald guy who sang about six songs for the opening act and then made us all wait 25 minutes before TFF decided to get onto the stage. They sang for about 90 minutes and that was it. At least they still sound the same.

Here are some pics I took using my crappy iPhone

thanks for all your opinions.  In the end I didn't go as most of my friends came to the same conclusion that it wasn't worth almost $700 just to see a 90 minute show where we may recognize only 6 songs.

Thanks DaBestHK for the suggestion to review some of the manila concert on Youtube.

So, bauku, how was the concert. You did not mention whether it was good, average or boring? Is the older guy in the blue tee shirt with the short hair an original member of TFF?

The opening act Michael Wainwright (Canadian) was very average at best. He sang about six songs accompanied by guitar only. That lasted about 20-25 minutes. After which the lights were turned on and we were all left waiting for another 25 minutes which was very annoying. The crowd started to get restless and started shouting and singing for TFF to appear.

TFF finally appeared and opened with Mad World followed by Everybody Wants to Rule the World. They sang their 80s hits Head over Heels, Sowing the Seeds of Love interspersed with songs from their last album "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending" released in 2004. Curt Smith sang a single from the 90s when he went solo after breaking up with Roland. TFF also did a decent cover of MJ's Billie Jean. Woman in Chains and Shout were saved for the encore.

The guy with the long hair is Roland Orzabal and the older guy is Curt Smith, both original TFF members. Michael Wainwright helped out with the vocals on a few of the songs. I guess RO and CS can't hit the high notes now.

I would rate the concert rather boring as it was just a couple of old guys singing. There were no dancers, special effects etc. Keeping the crowd waiting for such a long time and then only singing for 90 minutes was a bit of a letdown. On the plus side, their voices are still pretty good after all these years. The concert was fairly low budget as they only had a single backdrop, no TV screens, small stage, small band etc. I still rate concerts by MJ, Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Ayumi to be the ones to beat.

I had standing tickets and was right up against the barrier in the front. I arrived about 50 minutes before the concert and they were less than 50 people queuing in front of me. Kind of shows you how popular they are!

There was a pair of speakers right in front of my face and I tried to record some of the songs using my iPhone but the iPhone couldn't handle the bass.
