Does Listerine Work?

On the BBBJ thread http://forum.sex141.com/eforum/v ... &extra=page%3D1 we were discussing the perennial topic of BBBJ vs. CBJ safety.  Like most of you I'm a BBBJDTTCIMWSandG guy.  However being new to the HK scene I'd never run into the Listerine BBBJ before.  I asked if there was evidence that this provided any protection at all or if girls were just doing it because it seemed like a good idea.

As some might remember, Listerine's long standing claim to prevent colds and lessen their severity was disproved by a clinical trial 20 years ago, and any doctor will tell you that, while alcohol does indeed kill bacteria and viruses it takes a looooooong time to work.

However, J&J fought back with Listerine and demonstrated that it did help reduce common mouth infections like gingivitis and periodontal disease (bacterial).  Now comes a clinical trial that not only does it reduce those bacteria in the mouth but that in doing so it's reducing the amount of those bacteria getting into people's bloodstreams.  Seems relevant for us no?

http://www.bio-medicine.org/medi ... he-Bloodst-58260-1/

Now if we could just get a University to do a randomized clinical trial for STD transmission during BBBJTCWS using Listerine we'd have some really good data!   I don't think it would be too hard to get volunteers for that . . .

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

who's going to be the volunteer to be a "control" - using a placebo, to prove that the rate of infection is indeed higher if Listerine is not used ..????

I'll volunteer for anything but herpes and HIV . . . and genital warts . . . I don't do genital warts.  And Molluscum Contagiousum, I don't want any part of that trial either.  Oh and that new, unidentified oozing chancre disease, whatever that is.  And the rectal itching.  I'll skip that too . . .   But all the rest, anything you can fix with penicillin, I'm game!    I figure it's a cheap tradeoff for unlimited BJ's for the duration of the 6 month trial.   Or maybe not.

Hey D'Art, is there anyway we could all beg you to switch your Avatar back to the real David?  That pudgy, doughnut eatin' Jabba-the-Hut Photoshopped version is really starting to get to me . . .

I have always assumed that it works due to things I have read.  I usually carry a small bottle with me when I go punting just in case the girl doesn't have it (most girls have it anyway).  But even if it doesn't work, it sure feels nice.  I love the cool feeling.

Listerine is an excellent antiseptic, but not an antibiotic. Whatever soap can do, Listerine can do, with the added benefit that you can't comfortably put soap in your (or your partner's) mouth. Listerine will help if the viruses or bacteria are hanging around somewhere in her mouth or on your cock and haven't yet entered the tissues/passages. Same as a good wash would help. But Listerine certainly won't do anything for you once the viruses or bacteria have entered your body, any more than washing with soap would.

It's a different function between soap and Listerine.  Soap works by improving the rinsing action of water, not by killing germs.  The hydrophilic/hydrophobic ends of the soap molecule attach themselves to the water you're rinsing with and to the lipids in the cell wall of the germ you're washing off.  So soap is not about destroying the germ, just improving your ability to wash it away.

Listerine's alcohol and camphor additives are designed to actually destroy cell walls and membranes.  The thing is that even straight alcohol doesn't disinfect very quickly: it can take up to 20 minutes to render something nearly sterile (or so my doc tells me).

So in theory, IF the Listerine BJ actually lowers one's risk of contracting an oral STD, it may just be the rinsing action that's doing it (in other words a mouthful of water might be as nearly effective).

TheButler: You are absolutely correct. What I should have said is ANTIBACTERIAL soap, which is the only kind of soap I use. But I was wrong in saying only "soap," which of course implies a surfactant action, not an antibacterial/germicidal action.

The untested part of either soap or Listerine, and the point I mean to emphasize, is that we all operate under the assumption that germs are killed on contact, and in reality both products (antibacterial soap and Listerine) take a while to work (a while as in many minutes).

Not really arguing against the Listerine BBBJ (except for the burning sensation ), just wondering if it's really doing anything to increase safety.  I suppose the girls would have better anecdotal evidence on this if anyone ever bothered to write it all down.

Just wanted to add that my dentist adviced against using mouth wash as it kills both good bacteria and bad. So, regular use of some of the powerful stuff out there can damage your teeth and gums.

I'm a Health care professional. In my professional opinion Listerine would NOT protect you from any viral STD's. And considering most STD's are viral, it won't be much good.
As the most feared STD's is HIV and herpes (as you can't get rid of them) i would advise the bro's here not to just trust listerine to do the job.

Wait.... so for this to be effective, is the WG supposed to have the Listerine in her mouth WHILE giving you a BBBJ?
Is she supposed to swallow/gargle the Listerine too?

I find that Listerine is not very helpful at all.  I often still have bad breath even after I rinse with it.  Another problem with listerine is that it's burn my mouth pretty bad, and the original formula tastes rather aweful.  So I rarely use listerine.

Woo Hoo!  Looks like anal sex is lower risk for chlamydia than vaginal sex!!  Whoo Hoo!   I'm going back-door from now on!

Me thinks that for this chart to be most useful it needs to distinguish between the risk to the receptive partner (the girl sucking) and the non-receptive partner (the guy providing the cock and the load of steaming hot cum).  Otherwise the difference in risk between kissing and fellatio on the chart doesn't seem to make sense.

Do you use stronger medicine?

Look at the Listerine composition:

QUOTE:
The active ingredients listed on Listerine bottles are menthol, thymol, methyl salicylate, and eucalyptol. Menthol and eucalyptol are mostly for flavor.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listerine

It may be a good mosquito repellent, but I doubt it can protect you from STDs.

I usually use
Myramistin
or
Chlorhexidine
(Trade marks in your country may vary).

Do you have a similar easy-to-buy stuff in HK, or should I take it with me?
And can I buy antibiotics without prescription in HK?

4 moderators: Should it be posted in Q&A?
