I lived in Beijing between 2007-2013 and was young, single, and had the time and money to really explore the mongering underbelly of the city. I hear from friends that  Beijing is a completely different city now, and they’ve cleaned up a lot of places like Maggie’s for example.

UMU is a restaurant / cafe that has taken over part of Maggies. Maggies is closed for now but may well open as it always has after closures.

I would suggest you buy a decent street directory, I always get mine at the WangFuJing bookstore, A5 size has at least some English and is comprehensive so that you can orient yourself and find how to get from A to B.
