I dont have recent experience because I got a card that means I dont need a China VISA anymore, however "sometimes" you can get the VISA at Lo Wu and sometimes not. It also depends on what passport you are travelling with. That will influence availability AND price.

I know some Bros who checked the week before and it was OK and then found the rules had changed when they arrived...

There are places in HK where you can get same day VISA most of the time but quite expensive.

Re potential crackdowns during the Games, usual case they will tighten up but suggest you have a look at the China reports section, PM Bro Hunter and Geoduck who both seem to punt a lot in China.

you can get a same day visa at lowu but friends say it depends on your passport...they tend to dislike people with uk passports... earlier this year i got a 2 visit visa from china travels and it cost $900 ona uk passport...i aslo have an irish passport and have already got my multi visa which lasts one year and it was only £60 which is about $700...

i am pretty sure you can only have one valid visa in your passport at a time which means if you already have a visa and apply for a quick visa it may cancel out your first visa.

Not sure what passport you are using I know on a US passport you have to get a one entry visa first then you get a double entry the second time then you can apply for a multi entry

But as mentioned above they can change the rules at any time.

What sort of passport do you have? Think for US passports you're only able to get a visa at the China Travel Service and not at the Lowu border. I am pretty certain that if you have a valid visa in your passport they would not issue you with another visa at the border.

As for these short term visas which are only valid for Shenzhen, you can actually go outside the Shenzhen area. I have had guests that had gotten these visas at the border and they went as far as Zhuhai. When the hotel makes a photocopy of your visa, they don't really care and would not report you to the authorities for traveling beyond Shenzhen. Just don't get caught in a crackdown raid outside of Shenzhen. The police may harass  and penalize you if they realize you travelled beyond the Shenzhen area for these temp visas.
