I was in China when SARS hit. We were in the middle of it and didn't know it was going on. The gov't tried to cover it up. At the time SZ was a Special Economic Zone. I remember going into Shenzhen waiting in a line to check passports and IDs. About a month later we were back in the USA is when News on how bad it was started.
Then people didn't travel and people who had vacations planned to China/Asian cancelled. Completed flights were cancelled because lack of passengers. For mongering, majority stayed away during that period. There was a 80% change of dying, if you caught it, bad odds.
All business in China started to drop including prostitution. There were of girls around but far, far less customers. Girls needed the money far more than guys needing a fix. I do know someone who lived in China at time. I have no proof but I believe he was still fucking girls periodically during SARS. Later he claimed he was wearing a mask with this one girl.  He said nothing changed with pricing.
My two other friend from the USA called their KTV girlfriends in China. They said everything was normal like before. The girls were located in a small town in Taishan / Kaiping area. I guess things were different if you are in a small town compared cities like GZ, SZ and HK. At the border to HK and China, I heard it was like a ghost town. If anyone did cross, there were wearing masks.
They never found a cure for SARS. If it does hit again, I would certainly stop mongering ( punting ) for a while. |
