In regards to your question, you can probably make do with the APPT set they sell in the Grand Lisboa Casino, Macau. Comes in 300/500 chip configurations for about 100 usd for the bigger set. Not the best I've seen, but better than what those non-specialty stores will pawn to you.

I have not played in Asia but I used to enter tournaments back in England.
